John Madden, the legendary coach of the Oakland Raiders passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 at the age of 85. Coach Madden was one of football’s most influential titans, leaving his impact of football from playing, coaching (in the 1970s) and as a broadcaster for three decades.
Madden, born in Austin, Minnesota on April 10, 1936 played college football and later drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 21st round of the 1958 NFL draft. A knee injury in training camp prevented him from playing in any games. He turned his attention to coaching college football at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria.
Madden went on to coaching with the Oakland Raiders in 1967 as a linebackers coach attaining the top job two years later as the youngest coach in NFL history at the age of 32. With a record of 12-1-1, Madden never looked back. As a winning NFL coach and beating the Minnesota Vikings 32-14 in Super Bowl XI and being carried off the field by players in the most memorable of all NFL images.
In 2006, Madden was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in recognition of his coaching career. He is also widely known for the long-running Madden NFL video game series, which he lent his namesake to, endorsed, and fronted from 1988.
