Alaska’s nickname is: The Last Frontier and its motto is: North to the Future. Alaska is unique amoung U.S. states. In the early 1920s, President Warren G. Harding was the first U.S. President to visit Alaska. He predicted Alaska would one day become a U.S. state.
Alaska borders British Columbia and the Yukon in Canada to the east, and shares a western maritime border in the Bering Strait with the Russian Federation’s Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. To the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas of the Arctic Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean lies to the south and southwest.
Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area, larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined. Alaska was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million, or about two cents an acre on March 30, 1867. The formal flag-raising took place at Fort Sitka on October 18, 1867.
In the ceremony 250 uniformed U.S. soldiers marched to the governor’s house at “Castle Hill”, where the Russian troops lowered the Russian flag and the U.S. flag was raised. This event is celebrated as Alaska Day, a legal holiday on October 18.
Alaska’s capital, which had been in Sitka, the largest city-borough by total area in the U.S., until 1906, was moved north to Juneau. In 1888, gold was discovered along Turnagain Arm just south of modern-day Anchorage.
Mary Sattler Peltola (born August 31, 1973) is a former tribal judge serving as the U.S. representative from Alaska’s at-large congressional district since September 13, 2022. Peltola, a Democrat, is the first Native Alaskan to serve as a member of U.S. House of Representatives. Peltola is Yup’ik from Western Alaska. She was born in Anchorage.
Peltola previously served as a judge on the Orutsararmiut Native Council’s tribal court, executive director of the Kuskokwim River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, and member of the Alaska state legislature. Peltola is the only Democrat holding statewide office in Alaska.
She is a member of Orthodox Church in America Diocese of Alaska. She became the first Alaska Native member of Congress as well as the first woman ever to represent Alaska in the House. She was reelected to a full term in the regularly scheduled election on November 8, 2022.
High-yielding oil fields have been found in Alaska. Fresh seafood, primarily salmon, cod, Pollock and crab are among Alaska’s many exports. Transportation networks like the Alaska Marine Highway are valuable state assets.
Approximately half of Alaska’s residents live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Juneau is the second-largest city in the United States by area, comprising more territory than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware. The indigenous population of Alaska is proportionally the highest of any U.S. state, at over 15 percent.
