Alexandria incorporated as an Independent city in 1870. It’s approximately 7 miles south of downtown Washington, D.C. The historic center of Alexandria is known as Old Town. With its high concentration of boutiques, restaurants, antique shops and theaters, Alexandria’s Old Town is the go to place for many local residents.
One of Alexandria’s largest employers is the U.S. Department of Defense. In 2005, the United States Patent and Trademark Office moved to Alexandria, and in 2017, so did the headquarters of the National Science Foundation.
