Anaheim was named “Ana”, after the Santa Ana River, and “Heim”, the German word for “home”. Anaheim is a city in Orange County, California, part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Anaheim was founded by fifty German families in 1857 and incorporated as the second city in Los Angeles County on March 18, 1876. Orange County was split off from Los Angeles County in 1889.
On July 17, 1955 Disneyland opened in Anaheim. Its official name was changed to Disneyland Park and then Disneyland Resort. Walt Disney bought a 160 acre site in 1953. In 1954 construction was started under his direct supervision.
The park was unveiled during a special televised press event on the ABC Television Network on July 17, 1955. Walt Disney World opened in Orlando on October 1, 1971 and named in his honor.
Anaheim’s income is based on a tourism economy. In addition to The Walt Disney Company being the city’s largest employer, the Disneyland Resort itself contributes about $4.7 billion annually to Southern California’s economy. It also produces $255 million in taxes every year.
