Athens, named for Athens, Greece, was incorporated on August 24, 1872. Athens, known as “The Classic City”, lies about 70 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta, and is a satellite city of Georgia capital. The University of Georgia is located in Athens.
On January 27, 1785, the Georgia General Assembly granted a charter by Abraham Baldwin for the University of Georgia as the first state-supported university.
