Augusta is Georgia’s second-largest city after Atlanta. Home of the Augusta National Golf Club, hosts the first major golf tournament of each year, The Masters!

The City of Augusta and Richmond County began with a 1995 referendum in the two jurisdictions. The merger was completed on July 1, 1996. Augusta lies approximately two hours east of downtown Atlanta by car via I-20. Its nickname is “The Garden City”.
Augusta and Richmond County is a regional center of medicine, biotechnology, and cyber security. Augusta University, the state’s only public health sciences graduate university, employs over 7,000 people. Along with University Hospital, the Medical District of Augusta provides vital health services to the region.
Thomas Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States from 1913 to 1921, grew up in the American South, mainly in Augusta during the Civil War and Reconstruction.
