This port city, as a growing community, was founded in 1771 as “Brunswick” after the German duchy of Brunswick–Lüneburg and has served as an important tourism and logistics center.
Brunswick’s nickname is: “Shrimp Capital of the World”. Its Old Town Historic District is a favorite tourist area. Tourism is the single largest industry in Brunswick and Glynn County with millions of visitors each year.
Brunswick is located on a harbor of the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 40 miles north of Florida and 80 miles south of South Carolina. Brunswick is a main urban and economic center of the lower southeast part of the state after Savannah.
Brunswick and The Golden Isles of Georgia, a group of four barrier islands, with natural beaches, vast stretches of marshland, maritime forests, historical sites, and abundant wildlife are favorite destinations for tourists.
The islands’ beaches, resorts, shops, and historic sites annually attract visitors from around the world. St. Simons is the largest of the four. Sea Island, Jekyll Island and Little St. Simons Island makes up the other three barrier islands.
Art Downtown is a cultural arts center featuring a fine art gallery, studio, and production company. It is home to the Brunswick Actors’ Theatre. The Gallery on Newcastle is home to a display of scenes from coastal Georgia’s marshes.
