Charlottesville, Virginia, is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its motto is, “A great place to live for all of our citizens.” Its nicknames are C’ville and Hoo-Ville.
Charlottesville was founded in 1762. Charlottesville was the home of two presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. During their terms as Governor of Virginia, they lived in Charlottesville, and traveled to and from Richmond, the capital, along the 71-mile (114 km) historic Three Notch’d Road (present day U.S. Route 250).
Charlottesville is home to many 19th century places of worship. The first Black church in Charlottesville, the First Baptist Church of Charlottesville, was established in 1864.
Congregation Beth Israel’s 1882 building is the oldest synagogue building still standing in Virginia. The first Catholic church in Charlottesville was the Church of the Paraclete, built in 1880 and erected as a parish in 1896.
