Cincinnati was first settled in 1788. The city incorporated on March 1, 1819. Its distinct location gives Cincinnati many nicknames: The Queen of the West, The Blue Chip City, The City of Seven Hills, Athens of the West, Cincy, Little Paris, Paris of America, Porkopolis, The Queen City, The Nati and The “513”. Its motto is: “Strength in Unity”.
The City of Seven Hills refers to the hills that form a crescent from the east bank of the Ohio River to the west bank: Mount Adams, Walnut Hills, Mount Auburn, Vine Street Hill, College Hill, Fairmount, and Mount Harrison.
Several Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Cincinnati, such as Procter & Gamble, The Kroger Company, and Fifth Third Bank. General Electric has headquartered their Global Operations Center in Cincinnati. The Kroger Company employs 21,646 people locally, making it the largest employer in the city, and the University of Cincinnati is the second largest at 16,000.
