The City of Clarkston was named after W. W. Clark, a railroad official. Clarkston’s inspiring motto is: “Where Possibilities Grow”. Clarkston, a city of 15,000 in 2020, is one of only a few women majority-led city governments in America.
Clarkston has a new city manager, Shawanna Qawiy, and with this appointment, the number of women in leadership positions has increased in the city. She will join a city leadership team that includes women serving as mayor, police chief and majority of the City Council.
Clarkston is a majority-minority Georgia city of mostly African Americans. Shawanna Qawiy, Clarkston’s city manager said, “The City of Clarkston is the most diverse and culturally rich city in the State of Georgia”.
She added in a news release, “I am excited about the opportunities that are in the works for the city, the growth of the businesses, and working to enhance … efficiency, effectiveness, and productivity.”
