Gary was named after lawyer Elbert Henry Gary, who was the founding chairman of the United States Steel Corporation. Gary’s nicknames are: City in Motion, City of the Century, GI, Magic City of Steel, The Steel City, City on the Move. Its motto is: “We Are Doing Great Things”.
Gary had one of the nation’s first African American mayors, Richard G. Hatcher, and hosted the ground-breaking 1972 National Black Political Convention.
Karen Freeman-Wilson won election with 87 percent of the vote and her term began in January 2012; she is the first woman elected mayor in the city’s history.
Lake County Assessor Jerome Prince became the 21st mayor of Gary. Since no challengers filed for the November 2019 general election, Prince’s nomination is effectively tantamount to election, and officially succeeded Freeman-Wilson on January 1, 2020, two days after he was sworn in as the city’s 21st mayor on December 30, 2019.
The City of Gary, local residents, and local businesses are rolling out the “Welcome to Gary” and the genuine “You’re Welcome Here!” Gary welcome mats to visitors, local entrepreneurs, new startups, online sales, business founders, new residents, new contributors, and more value-added local businesses.
Gary encourages its residents to become inventors and creators of startups in retail, music, beauty, healthcare, legal, law, and legal services. Gary’s economic growth and prosperity in these areas has had a unifying effect on businesses, city residents and visitors.
