The motto of Grenada is “Ever Conscious of God We Aspire, Build and Advance as One People.” Grenada is an island country in the West Indies in the Caribbean Sea. Grenada consists of the island of Grenada itself, two smaller islands, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and several small islands which lie to the north of the main island and are a part of the Grenadines.
British-operated slavery was abolished in 1834, but the last enslaved and victimized African descendants were eventually freed in 1838. The slave owners were paid for their “property”. Paying off the slave owners did not come cheap. It cost the British government £20 million, a staggering amount that represented 40% of government expenditure in 1834.
In 2013, Britain’s Slave Compensation Commission records revealed the names of the 46,000 slave owners who received compensation when Britain abolished African slavery in 1833. The Trevelyans who owned a plantation with well over 1,000 slaves were fully compensated by Britain.
Plantation-owning families like the slave-owning Trevelyans (Sir John Trevelyan and his wife Louisa Simon) on Grenada received about £34,000 for the loss of their “property” on Grenada, the equivalent of about £3 million in today’s money (2022). How much money did the slaves receive? Nothing!
The legacy of slavery still hangs like a cloud over a country of about 112,000 people. Many are calling for reparations from Britain for slavery. Many have supported providing advance education for the youth so they can become well-educated adults who can break the “bonds of slavery” over time.
