Lansing is the capital of the State of Michigan. It is mostly in Ingham County, although portions of the city extend west into Eaton County and north into Clinton County. Its nicknames are: Capital City, L-Town, and “The Heart of Michigan”
It was named the new state capital of Michigan in 1847, ten years after Michigan became a state. Lansing is the only U.S. state capital (among the 47 located in counties) that is not also a county seat. The seat of government of Ingham County is Mason.
The City of Lansing embraces cultural equality, diversity, inclusion, equity and has many historic business-friendly communities. Lansing is rolling out the “Welcome to Lansing” welcome mat to new entrepreneurs, new startups, business founders, new residents and more value-added businesses.
Local Lansing and Ingham County entrepreneurs have created business opportunities in the area. With the help of local business leaders, the demand for startup ventures and the need for more goods and services has ignited the spirit of local ownership in the Lansing community.
