Incorporated as a town in 1907
Las Cruces (“the crosses”) was founded in 1849 and is the county seat of Doña Ana County. Las Cruces has a very meaningful nickname: “The City of the Crosses” and a city motto that reflects the caring nature of its citizens: “People Helping People”.
Las Cruces is the economic and geographic center of the Mesilla Valley, the agricultural region amd is located to the west of El Paso, Texas.
Las Cruces is the home of New Mexico State University (NMSU). NMSU was founded in 1888 as New Mexico’s only land-grant university. The city’s major employer is the federal government with numerous facilities in the area.
The Harvest Wine Festival is held over Labor Day weekend and the Southern New Mexico Wine Festival is held over Memorial Day weekend and also exclusively features New Mexico wines, local foods, and live music, are must-attend events in Las Cruces.
Today, Las Cruces embraces cultural diversity as a growing vibrant education-oriented community with affordable housing and plenty of available retail space for new businesses.
