Lewiston Maine’s nicknames are: “The Lew” • “Little Canada” • “Petit Canada” (Little Canada) for the inbound number of industrious Canadians from Québec. They were very industrious. The city motto is “Industry”.
Lewiston was founded on January 28, 1768 and was incorporated as “Lewistown” in 1795. In 1863, the town was incorporated as a city, Lewiston.
In 1855, local preacher Oren Burbank Cheney founded the Maine State Seminary, the first coeducational university in New England and one of the first universities to admit Black students before the Emancipation Proclamation.
In 1864, the Maine State Seminary was renamed Bates College in honor of Benjamin Bates, an American rail industrialist, textile tycoon and philanthropist.
