Incorporated in 1826 as a mill town
Lowell was named after its visionary leader, Francis Cabot Lowell. It was settled in 1652 and incorporated as a city in 1836. Lowell’s nicknames: Mill City • Spindle City • City of Lights • City of Magic. Lowell’s motto is “Art is the Handmaid of Human Good.”
