Initially named “Newtown.” After the organization of Bibb County in 1822, the city was chartered as the county seat in 1823 and officially named Macon. Macon lies near the state’s geographic center, about 85 miles southeast of Atlanta—hence the city’s nickname, “The Heart of Georgia”.
Voters approved the merger of the City of Macon and Bibb County, and Macon became Georgia’s fourth-largest city (just after Augusta). The two governments officially merged on January 1, 2014 becoming a consolidated city-county entity.
