Manhattan, also known as The City, is located in New York County, the smallest county by land area in the contiguous United States. Manhattan traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626 and formally incorporated as a city on February 2, 1653.
In 1674, the English bought New Netherland, after Holland lost rentable sugar business in Brazil, and renamed it “New York” after the English Duke of York and Albany, the future King James II. In 1898, New York City consolidated with three neighboring counties to form “the City of Greater New York”.
Manhattan is geographically the smallest of the five boroughs of New York City. U Thant Island (officially Belmont Island) is the smallest island (100-by-200-foot island), in Manhattan.
Manhattan serves as the city’s economic and administrative center, cultural identifier, and historical birthplace. Midtown Manhattan is the world’s largest central business district. Alphabet City is a neighborhood located within the East Village of Manhattan. Its name comes from Avenues A, B, C, and D, the only avenues in Manhattan to have single-letter names.
The Stature of Liberty, dedicated on October 28, 1886, is located on Liberty Island, Manhattan. It is a world symbol of the United States and its ideals of liberty and peace. It represents a symbol of welcome to immigrants arriving by sea from around the world. A broken shackle and chain lie at her feet as she walks forward, commemorating the recent national abolition of slavery in America.
Manhattan has been described as the cultural, financial, media, and entertainment capital of the world, is considered a safe haven for global real estate investors, and hosts the United Nations headquarters. Marble Hill is the northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan. It is one of the few areas within the borough of Manhattan not located on Manhattan Island.

Manhattan is home to the world’s two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq. Central Park, an urban park, located between the Upper West and Upper East Sides of Manhattan, is the fifth largest park in the city, covering 843 acres. It is the most visited urban park in the United States, with an estimated 42 million visitors annually, and is the most filmed location in the world.
