From the 17th century until the Civil War, plantations cultivated commodity crops, such as rice and indigo on plantations located in what is now North Charleston. North Charleston’s nickname is: “A great place to live, work, and play” and its motto is: “Perseverance – Progress – Prosperity”.

The population of Charleston County in 1870 was 73 percent Black. In the 2020 census the population of North Charleston was 40.2% African American. The Hispanic population was around 14% Latino.
