Omaha was founded on July 4, 1854
The city was founded along the Missouri River, and a crossing called Lone Tree Ferry earned the city its nickname, the “Gateway to the West”. Omaha introduced this new West to the world in 1898, when it played host to the World’s Fair, dubbed the Trans-Mississippi Exposition.

Omaha is home to Omaha Steaks. The company was founded in 1917, at 17th and Douglas streets, as a butcher shop, moving to 1211 Howard Street in 1924. It is a fifth-generation, privately held, family business that became one of America’s largest marketers of beef. Its specialty is Filet mignon, French for “tender, delicate, or fine fillet” cut of beef.
