Pinal County was founded on February 1, 1875. The county seat is Florence. Suburban growth southward from Metro Phoenix has begun to spread into the county’s northern parts with new businesses and job growth.
In the Yavapai Indian language “Pinal” means “pine mountains”. In 1899, the August 18, 1899 issue of The Arizona Magazine, gave incite into the name “Pinal”. It verified the name came from the pine-clad Pinal Mountains. The mountains are covered with Ponderosa Pine trees.
Pinal County contains parts of the Tohono Oʼodham Nation, the Gila River Indian Community and the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation, as well as all of the Ak-Chin Indian Community.
