Providence, first settled in 1636, is the capital and most populous city in Rhode Island. Providence was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a Reformed Baptist theologian. He named the area in honor of “God’s merciful Providence”. The city is situated at the mouth of the Providence River at the head of Narragansett Bay.
Providence has several nicknames: “The Creative Capital”, “The Renaissance City”, “The Divine City”, “PVD”, and “Prov”. Its motto is: “What Cheer?”
