The City of San Antonio, the seat of Bexar County, is the seventh-most populous city in the United States and the second-most populous city in Texas. Founded as a Spanish mission and colonial outpost in 1718, the city became the first chartered civil settlement in present-day Texas in 1731.
San Antonio has many nicknames: San Antone, Alamo City, Military City USA, River City, The 210, S.A., Countdown City, Something to Remember. Its motto is: “Cradle of Freedom”.
San Antonio is visited by about 32 million tourists a year. Local attractions include River Walk, the Tower of the Americas, SeaWorld, the Alamo Bowl, Marriage Island, Six Flags Fiesta Texas and Morgan’s Wonderland amusement parks. Sports teams include the five-time NBA champion San Antonio Spurs. The city hosts the annual San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo.
General Richard Edward Cavazos was born in Kingsville, Texas on January 31, 1929. He was a Korean War recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross as a first lieutenant and advanced in rank to become the United States Army’s first Hispanic four-star general.
In 1976, Cavazos became the first Mexican American to reach the rank of brigadier general in the United States Army. He received both the Silver Star and Distinguished Service Cross for his heroic actions in the Korean War.
General Richard Edward Cavazos served for thirty-three years, with his final command as head of the United States Army Forces Command. He passed away on October 29, 2017 in San Antonio.
