The City of St. Joseph, nickname St. Joe, was named after the town’s founder Joseph Robidoux and the biblical Saint Joseph. St. Joseph is home to Missouri Western State University. It’s the birthplace of 20th-century rapper and songwriter Eminem.
Saint Joseph was where pioneers would stay and purchase supplies before they heading out in wagon trains across the Great Plains. Between April 3, 1860, and late October 1861, St. Joseph was one of the two endpoints of the Pony Express.
Saint Joseph has a vibrant and diversified local economy. The local area supports a large food processing industry. Bio-fuels, meat and grains processing, candies, and various other products well known throughout North America are made in Saint Joseph.
In the spirit of the 19th century pioneers, many local residents have pioneered new and creative ways to start, promote and grow their own businesses. Online entrepreneurs, specialty shops, retail sales, products sales, personal services, restaurants, legal and support services are part of the growing Saint Joseph economy.
