The City of Stone Mountain is a city in DeKalb County, Georgia. It was first established as New Gibraltar in 1839 and was renamed as Stone Mountain in 1847. Locals regularly refer to the city as Stone Mountain Village so as not to confuse it with Stone Mountain Park next door.
Stone Mountain has its first African American female mayor, Dr. Beverly Jones, in January 2022. She wants to rebrand and revitalize the community where she has lived for a quarter century. Mayor Jones knows this is a small yet friendly town and she wants the word to spread far and near.
The City of Stone Mountain has many new value-added businesses coming into the city and the mayor has been very encouraging, helpful and supportive in rolling out the welcome mat to new residents and new businesses.
The city’s Downtown Development Authority and Welcome Center has implemented protocols to help put in place the mechanics needed to sustain positive growth in the city. South Mountain is set to become the destination for the millions of visitors flocking to the area rather than a pass-through location.
Mayor Jones says Stone Mountain wants “to be known as a small yet friendly town“. She says the city wants to “have a city look but a country attitude where everyone is warm and friendly and inviting to you”. “We welcome everyone and anyone who wants to come here and live in the city.” – Mayor Dr. Beverly Jones.
The City of Stone Mountain is an inviting cart-friendly community. The city is one of a handful of Georgia communities that permit golf carts on city streets with a city-issued inspection permit. Carts are also permitted within adjacent Stone Mountain Park, giving the community a friendly welcoming added leisure activity.
Stone Mountain has championed open government and local economic development. As a city, local residents are supporting the creation of retail sales, personal and business support services, online shopping, construction, restaurants and technology businesses. These are just a few local area business possibilities available for local entrepreneurs to help grow their local economy.
