In 1852, like many towns in the Willamette Valley, settlers and settler families called this area known as “East Butte”, their new home. The most noteworthy was the Tigard family, headed by Wilson M. Tigard. As of 2022, Tigard’s family home stands at the corner of SW Canterbury Lane and SW 103rd.
“East Butte” was renamed Tigardville in 1886. The town was renamed Tigard in 1907 by the railroad to better its promotion as a railroad destination. In 1961, Tigard was incorporated as city. Its motto is: “A Place to Call Home”.
Tigard has many attractions for families and visitors. The Portland Rose Festival every summer, the Tigard Festival of Balloons and the Broadway Rose Theatre Company are area attractions. The Tigard Public Library is a valuable source of information for area students and adults.
There are many companies based in Tigard. These include Consumer Cellular, Gerber Legendary Blades, LaCie, NuScale Power, InFocus, Western Family Foods, Elite Care corporate offices, and Stash Tea Company, among others.
Tigard is also home to the Washington Square mall, one of the largest in Oregon, and the northern part of Bridgeport Village. Medical Teams International is also based in Tigard.
