The state created DeKalb County on December 9, 1822, and District 572 became DeKalb’s 18th District, or the Brownings District, reportedly named for Andrew Browning. Some residents believe the name of the city was named for a local family name Tucker.
The first train steamed into the new Tucker station on Sunday, April 24, 1892. By June 1892, the US Postal Service appointed Alpheus G. Chewning first Postmaster of the Tucker Post office. Rural Free Delivery began on March 2, 1903.
In the 1960s local newspapers identified Tucker as “DeKalb’s Area of Golden Opportunity.” The post–World War II baby boom drove the growth of DeKalb County schools and with the affordability of the car, the expansion of the county highway system, and reasonably inexpensive fuel, Tucker became an ideal location to call home for today’s 37,005 residents in 2022.
Today, the city of Tucker embraces cultural diversity as a growing vibrant education-oriented community with affordable housing and plenty of available retail space for new businesses. As a business-friendly community, Tucker welcomes all culturally inspiring residents and value-based businesses.
Local Tucker entrepreneurs have created business opportunities in the city. With the help of local business leaders, the demand for startup ventures and the need for more goods and services has ignited the spirit of local business ownership in the Tucker community.
