The Vermont Republic abolished slavery before any of the other states. Vermont is the only state in New England that does not border the Atlantic Ocean.
The state capital is Montpelier, the least-populous state capital in the United States. Vermont’s official motto is: “Freedom and Unity” and “May the 14th star shine bright.” The Vermont College of Fine Arts is located in Montpelier, the state capital.
