West Orange reincorporated as a town on February 28, 1900. Its motto is “Where Invention Lives”. West Orange is approximately 12 miles west of Manhattan. West Orange is well known for having been home to the inventor Thomas Edison, who also maintained a laboratory and workshop in town.
In 1678, Anthony Olive became the first European to settle in what is now West Orange. In 1702, New Jersey became a royal colony of England. By 1706 what is now West Orange – was considered part of Essex County in the East Jersey territory.
In 1980, West Orange again became a township to take advantage of federal revenue sharing policies that allocated a greater share of government aid to municipalities classified as townships. West Orange was the home of Thomas Alva Edison (1847 – 1931) who was an American inventor and businessman.
Edison developed many devices in fields such as electric power generation, mass communication, sound recording, and motion pictures. Edison had a laboratory in West Orange, that featured the world’s first film studio, the Black Maria. He was a prolific inventor, holding 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as patents in other countries.
In the spirit of Edison, West Orange encourages its residents to become inventors and creators of startups in retail, music, beauty, healthcare, legal services, medical support, information technology (IT), online sales, EV cars, education technology to help West Orange’s local business community to grow and prosper.
