The Township of Woodbridge is the oldest original township in New Jersey. Woodbridge was named for John W. Woodbridge, settled in 1664 and chartered on June 1, 1669.
Woodbridge was reincorporated on October 31, 1693. Woodbridge Township was incorporated by the Township Act of 1798 of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798.
The Jonathan Singletary Dunham House was built near the location of the earliest grist mill in New Jersey by Jonathan Singletary Dunham who was a Member of the New Jersey Provincial Congress. Dunham is the U.S. President Barack Obama’s eighth great-grandfather.
