Yarnell is a census-designated place. There are 17.43 miles from Yarnell to Wickenburg in south direction and 25 miles by car, following the AZ 89 route.
Yarnell’s economy is based on ranching, mining and services to travelers and retirees. Peeples Valley, three miles north, is closely linked to Yarnell.
The newest Arizona State Park, Granite Mountain Hotshots Memorial State Park, is just 3 miles south of Yarnell on State Highway 89. It was dedicated in 2016 as a place to remember the 19 Granite Mountain Hotshot Firefighters who were lost on June 30, 2013, while fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire.
Yarnell Hill, which Highway 89 descends 1,300 feet in four miles, is a popular scenic drive. Yarnell offers great hiking, UTV riding, gold prospecting, shopping, restaurants, and so much more.
Yarnell Hill Fire Memorial Park is located in downtown Yarnell across from the Yarnell Fire Department’s administration building. A walkway guides visitors into and around the park.
The Town of Wickenburg is also located in Yavapai County. A German named Henry Wickenburg was one of the first prospectors. His efforts were rewarded with the discovery of the Vulture Mine, from which more than $30 million worth of gold has been dug.
