Galveston Island is a barrier island on the Texas Gulf Coast in the United States, about 50 miles (80.5 km) southeast of Houston. The entire island, with the exception of Jamaica Beach, is within the city limits of the City of Galveston, the county seat of Galveston County.
Notable history was made on Galveston Island in 1865. Freedom for all enslaved people was declared.
This was the beginning of the annual Juneteenth Celebration, also called “Jubilee Day” resulting in “Absolute equality” for all! General Order No. 3 on June 19, 1865 announced “All slaves are free.” This was proclaimed throughout Galveston County.
Juneteenth is commemorated on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865 announcement by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas.
On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed into law, with immediate effect, the creation of Juneteenth National Independence Day as the 11th annual national holiday to be celebrated every year on June 19.
