GLYNN COUNTY EVENTS
Brunswick County Seat • Georgia Local
Glynn County was one of Georgia’s original eight counties created on February 5, 1777 and was named after John Glynn.
In Brunswick, the Glynn County seat, hundreds of people gathered to raise their voices for justice ahead of the Ahmaud Arbery murder trial.
The 25-year-old Black man was shot and killed on February 23, 2020 while on a jog (two miles from his home) near the homes of three White men in Satilla Shores, outside of Brunswick.
Arbery, a Black man, was jogging when three White men grabbed their guns and pursued Arbery, who was unarmed. The three White men chased him for five minutes before he was murdered: Travis McMichael and his father Gregory, who were armed and in one vehicle, and their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan, who was in another vehicle.
The three men were convicted of murder on November 24, 2021 in the Glynn County Superior Court. All three were convicted of felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempt to commit false imprisonment. Travis McMichael was further convicted of malice murder.
On January 7, 2022, the McMichaels were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole plus 20 years, with William Bryan sentenced to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole after 30 years.
On February 22, 2022, all three men were found guilty in a federal hate crimes trial. Jurors found the men were motivated by racial anger. The jury of eight White people, three Black people and one Hispanic person deliberated only 4 hours to convict Ahmaud Arbery’s killers of federal hate crime charges, with sentencing at U.S. District Court in Brunswick to come on August 8, 2022.
In addition to violating Arbery’s civil rights, the McMichaels and Bryan were found guilty in federal court of attempted kidnapping. They were found guilty of violating Arbery’s rights to use a public street based on his skin color, and other crimes.
Travis McMichael is scheduled to be sentenced at 10 a.m. on August 8 before U.S. District Judge Lisa Godbey Wood according to court filings. Greg McMichael is scheduled to be sentenced at 1 p.m. and Bryan is scheduled for sentencing at 3 p.m. according to court records.
The McMichaels and Bryan face as much as life in federal prison for violating Arbery’s civil rights and between seven to twenty years on the other charges.
