Orange County was founded on December 29, 1824 and renamed January 30, 1845. It was named for the Orange fruit that grew throughout the county.
African Americans in the county, with the help of local organizations, organized to register and vote in the 1920 presidential election. Despite extreme racial violence against Black people in the county going back to the Reconstruction period of 1865 to 1877, the Black community remained positive and forward-thinking.
Orange County residents including African Americans and other minorities have really united to promote economic development and local businesses. After much perseverance, Orange County has become the number one destination in the world for vacations and family fun for people around the world.
In the 1960s, Orange County was selected by the Walt Disney Company as the future home of Walt Disney World. On October 1, 1971, Walt Disney World became a reality. Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Florida have become major attractions for residents and visitors alike.
Orlando is home to Valdez Venita Demings (born March 12, 1957), a democrat. Since 2017, Demings, an American politician, has served as the U.S. representative from Florida’s 10th congressional district, which includes parts of Orange County.
Val Demings is also the First Lady of Orange County, Florida, since December 4, 2018, when her husband Jerry Demings was sworn in as Orange County Mayor. Mayor Demings was elected Mayor of Orange County in August 2018, becoming the first Democrat and first African American to be elected to that office.
Jerry L. Demings (born June 12, 1959) is an American politician and former law enforcement officer serving as Mayor of Orange County, Florida, in office since 2018. A Democrat, he previously served as Sheriff of Orange County from 2009 to December 2018, and served as Chief of the Orlando Police Department and Director of Public Safety for Orange County.
