Palm Beach County is Florida’s wealthiest county. It leads the state in agricultural productivity; agriculture is Palm Beach County’s second-largest industry, after real estate development. Palm Beach County has been called the “Winter Vegetable Capital” of the nation.
Sports: The St. Louis Cardinals and the Miami Marlins conduct their spring training at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches, opened in February 2017 in West Palm Beach, accommodates both the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros for spring training.
Palm Beach Gardens is a city in Palm Beach County, 77 miles north of downtown Miami. Its nicknames are: The Gardens, PBG, and The Golf Capital of the World. Its mottos are: “A Signature City” and “A Unique Place to Live, Learn, Work, and Play!”
Palm Beach Gardens was incorporated as a “paper town” (meaning that it existed only on paper) on June 20, 1959. The 1960 Census recorded that the city officially had a population of one. By 1970 the city had a population approaching 7,000 people.
Palm Beach Gardens is home to Venus Ebony Starr Williams (born June 17, 1980), an American professional tennis player. A former world No. 1 in both singles and doubles, Williams has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, five at Wimbledon and two at the US Open. On February 25, 2002, she became the first African American woman to reach the singles world No. 1 ranking in the US Open Era, and the second of all-time after Althea Gibson.
Palm Beach Gardens is also home to Serena Jameka Williams (born September 26, 1981). Serema is an African American professional tennis player. She was ranked singles world No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for 319 weeks, including a joint-record 186 consecutive weeks, and finished as the year-end No. 1 five times. She has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any player in the US Open Era.
The Gardens Mall, PGA Commons, Midtown, Legacy Place, and Downtown at the Gardens are the center of the city’s retail market. They are located on the municipality’s main stretch on PGA Boulevard. There are 12 golf courses within the city limits.
